What Are Mylar Bags? A Canadian Brand Guide to Materials, Barriers & Formats
“Mylar bag” is widely used as shorthand for flexible barrier pouches—but it is not a complete production specification. Here is what brands should know.

“Mylar bag” is one of the most common phrases buyers use when they are really looking for a custom flexible barrier pouch. The problem is that the phrase does not tell a converter enough to build the right package.
What does “Mylar bag” actually mean?
Mylar is a well-known trade name associated with polyester film, but in everyday packaging conversations the term “Mylar bag” is often used much more broadly. A finished pouch may use several layers, each selected for a different job: printability, stiffness, puncture resistance, barrier and heat sealing.
That is why a useful enquiry should focus on the package performance rather than the label alone. Our Custom Mylar Bags page explains the main format and feature choices.
The five decisions that matter most
1. Product and shelf life
Coffee, cookies, powders, snacks and frozen foods can have very different sensitivities. Define what can damage the product—oxygen, moisture, aroma loss, light, grease or physical stress—and how long the package is expected to protect it.
2. Finished dimensions and fill weight
A nominal fill weight does not determine one universal bag size. Product density and desired presentation matter. If you have a current package, share the finished dimensions. If not, provide the product and target fill weight.
3. Closure and opening features
Zippers, tear notches, windows, valves and child-resistant closures change both the user experience and the pouch construction. For example, a zipper pouch needs enough top area for filling and final sealing.
4. Quantity by SKU
Total volume is only half the picture. Ten designs at 5,000 bags each are a different project from one design at 50,000 bags. Always include the quantity per artwork.
5. Filling method
Hand filling, semi-automatic filling and form-fill-seal equipment create different package requirements. If your line uses film on a roll, see our roll stock packaging guide.
Mylar bags vs flexible packaging
“Mylar bags” is a buyer-friendly search term. Flexible packaging is the broader category that includes premade pouches, bags, sachets and printed roll stock. If you are not sure which format you need, start with the product rather than the package name.
When should you request a custom quote?
Once the product, approximate size, volume and main features are known, you have enough information to start. The material structure and final dieline can be refined during the project.
