“High barrier” should describe a measurable product need, not just a marketing phrase. Start with what the product must be protected from—oxygen, moisture, aroma loss, light or another exposure—and how long that protection is needed.
Oxygen barrier
Oxygen can drive oxidation, flavour change, colour change or quality loss in some products. The required oxygen transmission performance depends on the product, headspace, package size, storage conditions and shelf-life target.
Moisture barrier
Moisture movement can change crispness, texture, powder flow and product stability. Dry snacks and cookies may be especially sensitive to gaining moisture, while other products can be affected by moisture loss.
Aroma and light protection
Coffee and aromatic products can benefit from structures that help retain aroma. Light-sensitive products may require opaque or metallized directions. A clear window can reduce light protection, so visual design and shelf-life requirements should be considered together.
Do not over-specify
More barrier is not automatically better if it adds cost, complexity or conflicts with sustainability goals. The objective is to meet the product requirement with a practical structure. Product testing and shelf-life validation are important when performance is critical.
