Mylar Bag Size Guide: Choosing Dimensions Around the Product
A “1 lb bag” is not one universal size. Product density, shape, headspace and desired shelf presentation can change the dimensions substantially.
Width and height
Width affects the front-panel presentation and opening size. Height must account for product volume, zipper position, tear notch and top seal area.
Bottom gusset
A stand-up pouch uses a bottom gusset that opens as the package is filled. Gusset depth influences internal volume and shelf stability.
Product density matters
A pound of dense powder occupies much less volume than a pound of bulky snacks or roasted coffee beans. This is why fill weight alone is not enough to select dimensions.
Headspace and filling
Manufacturing needs room to get the product into the bag and create a clean final seal. Too little headspace can make filling difficult or contaminate the seal area.
The best way to confirm size
If you already have packaging that works, send its finished dimensions or a physical sample. For a new format, test actual product in mockups or unprinted samples before committing to printed production.
