Mils and microns

Flexible packaging thickness may be discussed in mils or microns. A mil is one-thousandth of an inch. Microns are metric units. Total thickness can help describe a structure, but it does not tell you which materials make up that thickness.

Why thicker does not automatically mean higher barrier

Barrier performance depends heavily on the materials and layer design. A thinner structure containing an effective barrier layer can outperform a thicker structure made from materials with lower barrier properties.

Thickness and puncture resistance

Heavier or more rigid products, sharp edges and difficult distribution conditions can increase puncture or abrasion risk. Film choice, orientation and layer toughness matter alongside gauge.

Thickness and sealing

The sealant layer, sealing temperature, dwell time and pressure all influence package integrity. Changing thickness can affect how a film behaves on equipment.

How to choose a thickness

Instead of asking for the thickest possible bag, define the product weight, geometry, shipping conditions, shelf-life target, barrier needs, filling process and current issues. A packaging supplier can then evaluate a suitable structure.
